The building stood at the corner of Maple and Fifth, its brick facade weathered by decades of rain and sun. Inside, dust motes danced in shafts of afternoon light that fell between towering shelves.

Maya ran her fingers along the spines of books no one had touched in years. She was the last librarian, keeper of a dying art.

Chapter 1: The Notice

"We regret to inform you that the Municipal Library will close its doors permanently on March 31st." The letter had arrived on a Tuesday, printed on actual paper—an irony that was not lost on Maya.

She folded it carefully and placed it between the pages of her favorite book, a first edition of Fahrenheit 451. Some stories, she thought, have a way of becoming prophecy.
